China has committed 1 billion yuan ($137 million USD) in emergency humanitarian aid to Myanmar following the devastating March 28 earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7 and stands as one of the strongest in the country’s history. The quake claimed 3,645 lives, destroyed infrastructure, and left thousands in dire need of essentials such as food, water, and shelter.
According to a statement from the Chinese embassy, the aid package includes food, medical supplies, prefabricated homes, and funding for medical and disaster assessment teams. Beijing has already dispatched dozens of medical workers, field hospital personnel, earthquake specialists, and rescue dogs to assist in relief efforts.
China’s engagement goes beyond immediate response—Beijing has also promised to assist with loss assessments and long-term reconstruction. Over 30 Chinese rescue teams were deployed, and the Chinese Red Cross contributed an additional 1.5 million yuan ($206,000) in cash assistance.
China’s search-and-rescue teams officially concluded their mission and departed Myanmar on April 9. The pledge reflects China’s ongoing commitment to regional disaster relief and support for neighboring countries in times of crisis.
