Chelsea Beat Manchester United 2-0 to Retain Women’s League Cup Title

Chelsea Women successfully defended their Women’s League Cup title with a convincing 2-0 victory over Manchester United Women, as goals from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones secured the trophy for Sonia Bompastor’s side.

Chelsea took control of the final in the first half after a costly mistake from Dominique Janssen allowed James to break through on goal against her former club. The England winger calmly finished past goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce to give the Blues the lead.

Marc Skinner’s Manchester United side struggled to respond and nearly missed their best opportunity just before halftime when Ellen Wangerheim failed to convert a close-range chance from a cross delivered by Melvine Malard.

Chelsea dominated much of the second half and doubled their advantage in the 75th minute when substitute Beever-Jones pounced on a dangerous cross from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, toe-poking the ball into the net to seal the win.

The victory marked Chelsea’s seventh consecutive appearance in the competition’s final and secured their fourth Women’s League Cup title, further cementing their dominance in English women’s football.

However, the triumph was briefly overshadowed by concern for Nathalie Björn, who was left in tears after suffering a serious non-contact calf injury shortly after coming on as a substitute for her first appearance since November.

Despite a late push from Manchester United, including a stoppage-time opportunity for Malard, the Red Devils were unable to break through Chelsea’s defense and suffered their 16th defeat in 20 matches against the London side.

Speaking after the match, Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor praised her team’s performance and emphasized the club’s winning mentality.

“When you come into a final you always have pressure but it’s good pressure,” she said. “You want to be involved in these games and win titles. That’s what Chelsea is about.”

Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze added that lifting the trophy provides a major boost heading into the remainder of the season.

“It’s always special to win trophies,” Bronze said. “It gives us confidence and motivation to keep going.”

The result leaves Chelsea celebrating another major trophy while Manchester United’s search for a second major title continues.
