A documentary by Secwépemc filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat and Toronto journalist Emily Kassie has earned an Oscar nomination.
Their film, Sugarcane, which investigates abuse and missing children at a residential school near the Sugar Cane reserve in Williams Lake, B.C., is competing for the best documentary feature award.
Joining the Canadian nominees is Quebec-born filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, whose film Dune: Part Two is up for best picture. The sequel to 2021’s Dune features Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, aligning with Zendaya’s Chani and the Fremen in a quest for vengeance against his family’s enemies.
Toronto’s Linda Muir also secured a nomination for best costume design for her work on Nosferatu, Robert Eggers’ reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film.
The 97th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 2 in Los Angeles.
