Canadian swimming phenom Summer McIntosh will move to Texas after July’s world championships to train under legendary coach Bob Bowman, known for guiding Michael Phelps to 23 Olympic gold medals. McIntosh announced her commitment to Bowman’s pro team in Austin, Texas, starting late August, sharing excitement about joining the elite training group.
Bowman, who coached the U.S. Olympic team from 2004-2016 and led Arizona State University’s swim program until 2024 before moving to the University of Texas, trains top swimmers including French Olympian Leon Marchand and American stars Regan Smith and Simone Manuel.
McIntosh, 18, revealed the decision after finalizing her visit to the University of Texas swim program. She will join Bowman’s professional program, bypassing NCAA competition, to focus on her goal of winning five individual gold medals at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. In 2024, McIntosh made history as the first Canadian to win three Olympic golds in a single Games.
Before relocating, McIntosh is training in Toronto ahead of the Canadian swimming trials in Victoria, which will select the team for the world championships in Singapore. She has spent much of 2025 training in France with coach Fred Vergnoux, praising the competitive environment and personal coaching approach that supports her growth.
At trials, McIntosh is expected to compete in events including the 400m freestyle, 200m and 400m individual medleys, 200m butterfly, and likely the 800m freestyle as she increases her distance training.
McIntosh emphasized the strong camaraderie within Team Canada and Swimming Canada, highlighting the team’s supportive culture that drives their international success.
