Canadian Municipalities Accelerate AI and Data Integration to Improve Public Services

Canadian local governments are advancing their use of artificial intelligence and data to improve community service delivery. According to MNP’s 2024 Municipal Report, 23% of municipalities already use AI, with over half planning adoption, driven by goals of efficiency, decision-making, and citizen engagement.

The report, based on input from 282 local and regional governments, shows municipalities prioritize cyber security, customer experience, and modernization. Emerging areas like AI and smart city infrastructure have surged, with AI usage doubling from 2024.

Key barriers remain: 50% cite resource constraints, 44% face outdated processes, and 43% struggle with legacy systems. While 83% feel somewhat prepared for cyber threats, only 35% feel very prepared, and nearly one-third lack formal AI guidelines.

Municipalities applying AI focus on chatbots, public safety, HR automation, and self-service platforms for services like taxes and permits, easing administrative load and enhancing user experience.

MNP’s leadership in this study highlights the need for tailored, practical approaches over tech overhauls, offering data-driven insights to help municipalities progress despite challenges.
