Canadian Government Breaks Barriers for Pregnant Athletes with New Financial Support Policy

In a groundbreaking move for gender equity in sports, Canada has introduced a new funding policy ensuring that pregnancy will no longer result in financial setbacks for athletes. Announced on October 11, 2024, this initiative allows expecting and new mothers to access dedicated financial support through Sport Canada’s Athlete Assistance Program (AAP).

Previously, pregnant athletes faced the difficult choice of using their sole injury card for funding during pregnancy or forfeiting financial assistance entirely while sidelined. The new policy eliminates this dilemma by providing additional funding cards specifically for pregnancy and postnatal recovery.

Two-time Olympic rower and MOMentum founder Jill Moffatt hailed the change as a monumental step toward normalizing family planning for competitive athletes. “This funding gives athletes the equivalent of maternity leave, a policy common in most workplaces,” Moffatt explained. “It’s a major shift, signaling that having children and pursuing elite sports can coexist without fear of discrimination or financial insecurity.”

The policy aims to benefit all athletes—mothers and fathers—by promoting inclusivity in high-performance sports. Minister of Sport Carla Qualtrough emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting athletes’ aspirations both on and off the field. “Eligible athletes growing their families can now rely on continued financial backing during and after pregnancy,” she said.

The federal government is allocating $35 million over five years to the AAP, which includes a 23% increase in living and training allowances for carded athletes.

This initiative underscores Canada’s dedication to equity in sports, ensuring that athletes have the resources needed to thrive while breaking down barriers for future generations of competitor
