Canadian Comedy Legend Mike Bullard Passes Away at 67: A Legacy of Laughter, Scandals, and Humanitarian Work

Canadian comedian and broadcaster Mike Mike Bullard has passed away at the age of 67, his family confirmed on Sunday. Known for his quick wit and sharp humor, Bullard hosted two prominent late-night TV shows and a popular radio program. His career was punctuated by both successes and personal challenges.

Bullard’s half-brother, musician Chuck Jackson, revealed that the family was informed of his death on Friday. While the coroner is currently investigating the cause of death, it’s known that Bullard had been dealing with ongoing health problems. Jackson mentioned that a friend discovered Bullard’s body at a residence where he was staying, and authorities are now in possession of the body. The family is asking for privacy as they mourn, with a celebration of his life to be planned once family members from abroad can gather.

Bullard’s career spanned multiple decades, with his most notable achievements being the host of two late-night talk shows: Open Mike with Mike Bullard (1997-2003) on CTV and The Mike Bullard Show (2003-2004) on Global. He earned two Gemini Awards for his work on CTV’s show. Mark Breslin, the CEO of Yuk Yuk’s comedy club chain, fondly remembered Bullard as a “fantastic comedian” and a master of crowd work. According to Breslin, Bullard’s ability to engage live audiences was unmatched.

In addition to his work on television, Bullard also hosted the radio show Beyond the Mic with Mike Bullard on CFRB Toronto between 2010 and 2016. However, his radio career was abruptly halted following accusations of harassment against an ex-girlfriend. In 2018, Bullard pleaded guilty to making harassing phone calls and breaching court orders involving journalist Cynthia Mulligan, resulting in a conditional discharge. This legal fallout pushed Bullard into a deep depression, as Breslin explained, and the comedian felt abandoned by many during his darkest times.

In a surprising turn, Bullard traveled to Ukraine in November 2022 to engage in humanitarian work, where he raised funds and delivered supplies near the frontlines. He returned to Canada in early 2023 after several months of dedicated service.

Though Bullard’s later years were marked by scandal and personal battles, his impact on the Canadian comedy scene remains significant. The country mourns the loss of a comedic icon whose career entertained millions.
