The Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (CAISI) has announced funding for 10 research projects, each receiving $100,000, aimed at addressing critical issues in AI such as misinformation, generative AI, and the safety of autonomous systems.
Among the funded projects is a high-profile initiative led by AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, which will explore the opaque decision-making processes behind large language models, a key type of generative AI focused on text generation.
Launched last year, CAISI is part of a global network of publicly funded AI safety organizations that emerged amid growing calls from experts for stronger AI regulation. However, recent global trends have shifted toward accelerating AI adoption, often sidelining safety-focused efforts.
In Canada, the federal Liberal government is emphasizing AI’s economic potential as it prepares to host the upcoming G7 summit. Meanwhile, the newly appointed AI minister, Evan Solomon, has yet to clarify the scope of his role regarding AI governance and safety.
