Canada’s Emergency Alert System Undergoes Nationwide Test During Emergency Preparedness Week

Canada’s National Public Alerting System (NPAS) is conducting tests on television, radio, and compatible wireless devices across eight provinces and all three territories this Wednesday. Alberta and Quebec are not participating in this month’s tests.

Known as Alert Ready, the system is designed to deliver urgent alerts about life-threatening events like tornadoes, floods, fires, and Amber alerts. The alert test will mimic the sound of an emergency warning, but no public action is required.

Not all mobile devices may receive the test alert due to factors such as device compatibility, LTE or 5G network connection, cell tower access, or specific device settings. A full list of compatible devices is available online.

NPAS is a joint initiative by federal, provincial, and territorial governments, though participation in the test is determined individually by each province.

The May tests are part of Emergency Preparedness Week, during which Public Safety Canada is offering an emergency preparedness guide to help Canadians stay informed and ready for potential emergencies.
