Canada continues to cement its position as a global leader in clean technologies with a significant investment in zero-emission vehicles, battery technologies, and semiconductors. These sectors are not only driving the country’s transition to a net-zero economy but also fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing Canada’s role in the global supply chain for EV and semiconductor technologies.
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced a strategic investment of up to $169.4 million in Linamar Corporation through the Strategic Innovation Fund. This funding will support Linamar’s Innovation Driving Green Technology Project, which aims to accelerate the development of cutting-edge green technologies in the automotive sector. The project will focus on the manufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) parts and the development of new semiconductor packaging techniques to enhance the performance and efficiency of EV batteries.
Linamar’s primary objective is to expand its portfolio of advanced electrified products that reduce emissions while maintaining flexibility in response to evolving market needs. The project will be carried out at Linamar’s Ontario-based facilities in Guelph, Salford, Welland, and Windsor, with the introduction of new semiconductor packaging methods designed to improve EV range and reduce charging times.
This investment is part of a broader strategy that has already attracted billions of dollars in investments in Canada’s critical minerals, battery manufacturing, and electric vehicle sectors. Linamar’s project will create approximately 2,000 full-time jobs and 300 co-op positions while generating over $800 million in private investments. By advancing the next generation of EV and battery technology parts, this initiative will further strengthen Canada’s position as a key player in the global battery supply chain.
With access to global markets, a highly skilled workforce, and abundant natural resources, Canada is well-positioned to lead the future of battery manufacturing and clean technologies. The Innovation Driving Green Technology Project will help solidify Canada’s electric vehicle ecosystem and contribute to long-term economic growth.
