Canada’s Éliot Grondin secured gold in the men’s snowboard cross final at the World Championships in Corviglia, Switzerland. France’s Loan Bozzolo took silver, while Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle claimed bronze.

Grondin, 23, from Sainte-Marie, Que., capitalized on a late-race collision between Haemmerle and Austria’s Jakob Dusek, the defending champion, to seize the lead and secure victory. “I just decided to stay patient and build speed,” Grondin said.

The reigning World Cup leader, Grondin now holds 504 points, 141 ahead of Bozzolo with two races left. His season includes two golds, two silvers, and a bronze on the World Cup circuit.

Italy’s Michela Moioli won the women’s event in a dramatic photo finish ahead of Britain’s Charlotte Bankes and France’s Julia Pereira de Sousa. Canada’s Meryeta O’Dine finished fourth.

The World Cup snowboard cross season concludes next weekend at Mont-Sainte-Anne, Que., with CBC Sports streaming the event live on April 5.
