Canada Unveils Roster for 2025 Women’s Hockey Worlds as PWHL Elevates Competition

Canada has finalized its 25-player roster for the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship, with general manager Gina Kingsbury noting the selection process was more competitive than ever, thanks to the increased exposure provided by the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

With the PWHL in its second season, Canadian national team hopefuls have had more high-intensity game experience, making roster decisions tougher. Kingsbury said the league’s growth has provided a clearer picture of which players are ready to represent Canada on the international stage.

“I do believe this roster, there was way more debate than we’ve had in the past,” Kingsbury said. “The great thing is this league has created a platform for players to showcase their abilities and what they bring to the game. Athletes are able to make our team based on their performances throughout the whole season and not just a little glimpse.”

The reigning world champions will defend their title from April 9-20 in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic. Of the 25 players named to the roster, 23 currently play in the PWHL.

Canada’s lineup features a mix of experience and fresh talent. Veteran stars such as Marie-Philip Poulin, Brianne Jenner, Natalie Spooner, Sarah Nurse, and Renata Fast will lead the squad, while several first-time world championship participants—including 18-year-old defender Chloe Primerano and goaltender Ève Gascon—have earned spots.

“We’ve won four of the last five major events with this core,” Kingsbury said. “You don’t want to rest on that and assume success, but there’s definitely confidence that we can overcome any challenge together.”

The team will open the tournament on April 10 against Finland in a competitive group that includes the United States, Czech Republic, and Switzerland. Unlike previous years, Canada will forgo a pre-tournament exhibition game due to a tight schedule following the PWHL’s international break.

With a roster that balances experience and emerging talent, Canada is set to compete at the highest level once again, aiming for another gold medal on the world stage.
