The Canada Post strike shows no signs of ending as negotiations between the union and management remain deadlocked. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon confirmed on Wednesday that mediation efforts have been temporarily suspended after the parties failed to make progress on key issues.
Mediation on Hold
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), MacKinnon explained that the federal mediator overseeing the talks has stepped back to allow both sides to reassess their positions.
“This pause in mediation activities will hopefully permit the parties to return to the bargaining table with renewed resolve,” he wrote.
Ministerial Intervention
MacKinnon emphasized that the responsibility for finding a resolution lies squarely with the involved parties. He has requested both sides to meet at his office, where he will urge them to break the stalemate.
“They alone are responsible for finding a solution to the deadlock,” MacKinnon said, adding that the mediator is ready to resume discussions as soon as productive bargaining can restart.
Impact on Canadians
The ongoing strike has already caused significant disruptions:
•A Surrey man’s ashes remain stuck in shipping limbo, highlighting the emotional toll of postal delays.
•Small businesses are feeling the strain as delayed shipments impact operations.
•Despite the strike, Canada Post has assured that the beloved Letters to Santa program will continue.
A Call for Urgency
Canadians, businesses, and families across the country are eagerly awaiting a resolution. As the Labour Minister noted, “Canadians are counting on them to create these conditions quickly.”
