Canada Mourns the Loss of Beloved Puppeteer Noreen Young

Noreen Young, the celebrated Canadian puppeteer best known for creating CBC’s beloved children’s show Under the Umbrella Tree, has died at age 85 after suffering a stroke. Born in Ottawa, Young spent over five decades enchanting audiences with her unique puppetry, bringing characters like Gloria Gopher to life from 1987 to 1993.

A master puppet builder, Young also helped launch the Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival in Almonte, Ontario, where she served as the first artistic director. Her influence was profound, touching generations of Canadian children and artists alike.

Named to the Order of Canada in 1995, Young’s passion began at age 12, performing in coffee houses around Ottawa. Though she briefly pursued visual arts, puppetry was her true calling, contributing to iconic shows like Hi Diddle Day and Sesame Park.

Her brother Stephen Brathwaite, who portrayed Jacob Bluejay in Under the Umbrella Tree, said her work was “an act of love” and a reflection of her caring, determined spirit. Tributes continue to pour in, including from longtime friend and puppeteer Ronnie Burkett, who called her a mentor and lifelong inspiration.

Young’s legacy lives on in her characters, community, and the generations she inspired.
