An early morning fire at a Burnaby, B.C., apartment building has displaced up to 20 residents and hospitalized 15, including three in serious condition. The blaze broke out around 3:00 a.m. PT on the fourth floor of 7272 Kingsway St., spreading smoke up to the 12th floor.
Burnaby Fire Department’s Paul Rushton stated that nearly 50 firefighters responded to the scene. The building, constructed before modern sprinkler regulations, lacked fire suppression systems. Firefighters also faced challenges from lithium batteries found in the affected area.
