Box Office: ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Nears $300M, ‘Mufasa’ Eyes $700M, ‘Ne Zha 2’ Approaches $1.9B

This weekend, several films are approaching significant box office milestones. Marvel and Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World” is nearing a $300 million global gross after its second weekend, while Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” is expected to surpass $700 million by Monday, following ten weeks in theaters.

Continuing its record-breaking trajectory, the Chinese blockbuster “Ne Zha 2” is approaching $1.9 billion in its domestic market alone, having become the highest-grossing animated film worldwide last week.

Meanwhile, international audiences are embracing Universal and Working Title’s “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” Released theatrically overseas (with a domestic release on Peacock), the film has amassed over $70 million in its first two weekends.

Focusing on “Captain America: Brave New World,” the Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford-led film experienced a 60% drop in its second international weekend (55% excluding China), adding $35.3 million from 52 markets. The overseas total stands at $148.2 million, contributing to a global tally of $289.4 million. The film is currently pacing slightly behind “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Winter Soldier” internationally, with projections suggesting a worldwide finish around $450 million. IMAX screenings have contributed $23.3 million globally, including $10.2 million from international markets.

The top five markets to date are the UK ($16.7 million), China ($13.5 million), Mexico ($10.7 million), Korea ($9.1 million), and France ($8.9 million).

As previously mentioned, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” has exceeded $70 million at the international box office. This includes $67.6 million from 72 Universal markets, outperforming the three previous Bridget Jones films and “Ticket to Paradise” at the same point, aligning with “It Ends With Us,” and more than doubling “Anyone But You.” The overseas total rises to approximately $72 million, including France, where Studiocanal is the distributor.

Following its impressive debut last weekend—the largest opening of the franchise in 41 markets and the best-ever for a romantic comedy in the UK—the film experienced a 34% drop in holdover across Universal Pictures International markets.

The UK audience remains captivated, with a cumulative total of $34.5 million after two weeks. Renée Zellweger and the cast maintained the No. 1 spot, bolstered by strong midweek performances, surpassing all comparable films at the same point, including “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “Mad About the Boy” has outperformed the UK totals of “Fifty Shades Darker,” “It Ends With Us,” “Sex and the City 2,” and “Fifty Shades Freed.”

The film also held the top position in Australia, Poland, and the Netherlands this weekend. New openings included the Czech Republic, where it debuted at No. 1 with $600,000 from 250 screens.

The top five markets to date are: UK ($34.5 million), Australia ($6 million), Poland ($4.2 million), Netherlands ($3.3 million), and Spain ($1.9 million).

Upcoming releases include Italy and Germany this week, followed by Japan and Korea in April.

Additionally, Studiocanal’s “Paddington in Peru” has increased its global gross to $150.2 million, with the international total reaching $125 million, including $25.3 million from Sony markets. The current weekend added $7.7 million across 55 international markets.

Regarding “Mufasa,” the worldwide gross stands at $698.7 million through Sunday, with $453.3 million from international markets. The tenth weekend added $4.4 million from 52 markets, positioning the film to surpass the $700 million global mark by tomorrow. The top five international markets are France ($43 million), UK ($40.3 million), Germany ($31.9 million), Mexico ($30.9 million), and Italy ($23.6 million).

The phenomenon that is “Ne Zha 2” has increased its China total to an estimated $1.87 billion, according to Maoyan figures. Including estimates from other markets that released over the past two weekends, the global total is approximately $1.89 billion. Maoyan has revised its final prediction for China’s gross to RMB 15.1 billion ($2.08 billion).

In IMAX, “Ne Zha 2” has reached $131 million, making it the format’s ninth-biggest release ever and its top animated title.
