Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing Commercial Aircraft, has traveled to India to assist Air India following the devastating June 12th crash of flight AI171. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, plunged into a residential area shortly after takeoff, killing all 241 on board and multiple people on the ground. Only one passenger survived.
Boeing, reeling from the incident—the first total hull loss of a 787—has scaled back its participation at the Paris Air Show. Company CEO Kelly Ortberg also canceled his scheduled appearance at the event. Boeing expressed its condolences and confirmed that it is working closely with Air India and Indian authorities to support the ongoing investigation.
The crash prompted the involvement of multiple international investigative agencies, including India’s AAIB, the UK’s AAIB, the FAA, and the NTSB. Air India has since contacted the families of victims, offering interim payments of $28,470, with parent company Tata Sons pledging an additional $115,000 per family.
The lone survivor, seated in 11A, recounted escaping through a nearby emergency exit—highlighting the rare miracle amid a national tragedy. Boeing has declined to comment on Stephanie Pope’s trip, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
