Authorities have released body camera footage from outside the Santa Fe home of Gene Hackman, where he and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in late February. The footage, which has been redacted, shows deputies speaking with workers who called 911 after seeing someone lying on the floor inside the residence.
Despite initial concerns about a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning, investigators later confirmed that Hackman, 94, died of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s, while Arakawa succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare rodent-borne disease.
A New Mexico court recently granted a temporary restraining order preventing the release of photographs or videos from inside the couple’s home. Hackman’s estate petitioned to block the images, citing privacy rights under the 14th Amendment.
The footage also briefly captures one of the couple’s dogs running on their wooded property. Another dog, found in a crate near Arakawa’s body, likely died from dehydration and starvation, according to a state veterinary report. Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth, has requested the dog’s cremation.
