Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind Blade Runner 2049, has filed a lawsuit against Tesla, its CEO Elon Musk, and Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, the defendants used sequences from the iconic sci-fi film without permission to generate promotional materials for Tesla’s new self-driving robotaxi, unveiled on October 10.
The lawsuit accuses Musk, Tesla, and Warner Bros. of multiple counts, including direct and vicarious copyright infringement, contributory copyright infringement, and false endorsement. During the robotaxi launch event, Musk referenced Blade Runner 2049, displaying imagery strikingly similar to scenes from the film, despite Alcon Entertainment’s refusal to grant permission for such use.
Alcon Entertainment claims that the unauthorized use of their material could cause confusion among potential brand partners, especially as they are currently in discussions with automotive companies for collaborations on the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 TV series. The lawsuit seeks damages and a court order preventing Tesla from further distributing the disputed promotional content.
