Bill Gates Weighs in on Elon Musk’s DOGE Initiative, Calls It ‘Valuable,’ Warns of Federal Deficit Risks

The Microsoft cofounder supports efforts to reduce government inefficiencies but cautions against cutting essential programs like HIV treatment.

In a recent Wall Street Journal interview, Bill Gates shared his thoughts on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), calling the initiative “a valuable thing” while emphasizing the need to reduce the U.S. federal deficit. The Microsoft cofounder expressed concerns that unchecked government spending could lead to long-term financial instability, but he also warned against eliminating critical programs that provide vital services to citizens.

Gates Supports Budget Scrutiny, Warns of Financial Risks

Gates acknowledged that Musk’s DOGE initiative, which aims to tackle government inefficiencies, could help rein in excessive spending. He advocated for a “zero-based budgeting approach,” suggesting that a fresh, comprehensive evaluation of expenditures could yield significant savings.

“I’m amongst the people who think the deficit needs to be brought down because otherwise, it will create a financial problem for us,” Gates told the Journal. “That effort could come up with some good things.”

The federal deficit has been a growing concern, with experts warning that continued borrowing without strategic reductions could lead to economic instability. Gates’ remarks align with calls from fiscal conservatives who argue that the U.S. government must take aggressive measures to curb spending.

Musk’s DOGE Aims for Trillion-Dollar Savings

Musk launched DOGE with an ambitious goal of cutting $2 trillion in federal spending. However, in a conversation with political strategist Mark Penn earlier this month, Musk revised expectations, suggesting that the commission had a “good shot” at saving at least $1 trillion.

The initiative has already taken steps to curb wasteful expenditures. On Friday, DOGE announced it had canceled approximately $420 million worth of existing and upcoming government contracts, along with terminating two federal leases. Despite these early moves, analysts—including those at Business Insider—suggest that far more aggressive measures will be needed to achieve even Musk’s revised targets.

Where Would Gates Cut Spending?

During the interview, Journal editor-in-chief Emma Tucker asked Gates where he would look for savings if he were leading DOGE. Gates responded that the initiative would need to examine all areas of government spending, including pensions, defense, and healthcare.

“Well, given the numbers that they’ve tossed around, they’ll have to look at everything,” he said.

However, he cautioned against cutting programs that provide critical long-term benefits, particularly in global health initiatives. Gates specifically pointed to the U.S. government’s role in funding HIV treatment programs, which he argues have saved millions of lives worldwide.

“I obviously believe in HIV medicines, where the U.S. is keeping tens of millions of people alive,” Gates stated. “If you cut those off, not only would they die when we have a cure on its way, but the negative feelings you’d have, say in Africa, would be worse than never having done the thing at all.”

Balancing Fiscal Responsibility and Social Impact

Gates’ perspective highlights the challenges of budget-cutting efforts like DOGE. While reducing waste and inefficiencies is a widely supported goal, the risk of defunding essential programs remains a key concern. The billionaire philanthropist, who has dedicated much of his post-Microsoft career to global health and poverty reduction through the Gates Foundation, emphasized the need for a balanced approach—one that eliminates unnecessary spending without jeopardizing vital public services.

As DOGE moves forward, the debate over where and how to cut government spending is likely to intensify. Musk’s initiative has garnered both praise and skepticism, with critics questioning whether it can deliver meaningful savings without disrupting critical functions.

With Gates’ endorsement of its core mission—but also his warning about unintended consequences—DOGE’s path forward will be closely watched by policymakers, economists, and the public alike.
