Cruise vacations are synonymous with relaxation and adventure, but what happens when a medical emergency arises miles away from the nearest hospital? Cruise ships are equipped with medical facilities, yet their capacity and functionality remain a mystery to many passengers.
Dr. Aleksandar Durovic, who has spent 20 years as a cruise ship medic, highlights that life as a doctor on the high seas is a far cry from what’s portrayed in shows like The Love Boat. “Most of what we do is emergency services, similar to an ER, but we also handle chronic conditions for the crew,” he explains. The role demands not only medical expertise but also the ability to operate under high-pressure situations with limited resources.
Amy White, director of medical operations for Vikand—a company providing healthcare services for over 150 ships—emphasizes the critical need for emergency medicine experience. Cruise medical staff must handle a wide range of scenarios, from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions. “There’s no backup onboard, so the medical professional has to be highly skilled and independent,” White notes.
Cruise ships follow guidelines set by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Vessels affiliated with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) are required to have at least one medical professional available 24/7, along with designated spaces for treatment and intensive care. Equipment includes ventilators, cardiac monitors, and defibrillators, with mandatory ultrasound capabilities set to roll out in 2026.
Despite the high stakes, hospitality remains a cornerstone of onboard medical care. “Guests are always right,” White says, underlining the importance of bedside manner in maintaining a positive passenger experience.
