British Columbia Premier David Eby has firmly stated he will not support a new oil pipeline through the province, rejecting Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s suggestion that he might change his stance. Eby highlighted that the publicly-owned Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline is already operational in B.C., and the province remains opposed to lifting the ban on oil tankers off its northern coast.
Responding to Ford’s remarks ahead of a premiers’ meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Eby emphasized that it is not his role to comment on Ontario’s infrastructure projects, such as a potential tunnel under Toronto’s Highway 401, or Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s pipeline plans connecting Alberta and northern B.C., which he described as distant and lacking a clear proponent.
Eby stated his focus is on protecting British Columbia’s interests by promoting “shovel-ready” projects. At the time of the premiers’ meeting in Saskatoon, Eby was on a trade mission in Japan, with Deputy Premier Niki Sharma representing B.C.
