World number one Jannik Sinner is set to make his competitive return at the Rome Masters in May following a three-month doping ban. Italy’s Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri believes while Sinner may take time to regain momentum, he’ll be at peak form for the French Open starting May 25.
Sinner, who has been sidelined since his Australian Open victory, accepted a doping ban in February after two positive tests, despite an earlier tribunal clearing him. The 23-year-old will be eligible to play again on May 4 and is already deep into preparations, training in Monte Carlo and practising with Indian Wells champion Jack Draper.
Volandri emphasized that Sinner’s preparation is geared toward the long, physically demanding matches at Roland Garros. He views the break as a blessing in disguise, allowing Sinner a much-needed recharge that could benefit his performance over the next few seasons.
Though Sinner is unlikely to hit a winning streak immediately, Volandri noted that the player remains mentally calm, focused, and highly motivated, based on conversations with coach Simone Vagnozzi.
