Halifax-based folk duo Cassie and Maggie MacDonald say they were subjected to an unsettling traffic stop in Ohio, where police accused them of having narcotics in their rental car and questioned their allegiance to Canada or the U.S. The sisters, who were pulled over on March 5, claim officers searched their vehicle after alleging it tested positive for drugs but found nothing.
During separate interrogations, each sister was asked whether they preferred Canada or America, a question that left them shaken. They were ultimately issued a warning for distracted driving, which they acknowledge was due to handling a phone while on a call.
The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office has denied any wrongdoing, calling media coverage of the incident “false reporting and hate mongering.” They maintain that the deputies acted professionally and that the question about Canada and the U.S. was casual.
Despite the incident, the MacDonalds plan to continue touring in the U.S., emphasizing their love for their fans and music.
