Austrian Opera-Techno Star JJ Wins 2025 Eurovision with “Wasted Love”

Classically trained countertenor JJ, representing Austria, captured the 69th Eurovision Song Contest crown with a genre-defying performance of “Wasted Love,” blending operatic vocals with a techno edge. JJ, whose real name is Johannes Pietsch, marked Austria’s third Eurovision victory and its first since Conchita Wurst in 2014 — a performer JJ calls a mentor.

Israel’s Yuval Raphael took second place with the stirring ballad “New Day Will Rise,” winning significant public support despite widespread pro-Palestinian protests calling for Israel’s exclusion due to the ongoing war in Gaza. Estonia’s Tommy Cash came third with “Espresso Macchiato,” followed by Sweden’s KAJ in fourth place

The finale, held in Basel, Switzerland, featured 26 finalists out of 37 entries, captivating over 160 million global viewers with vibrant acts and diverse musical styles, including Latvian folk, Icelandic rap, and Italian glam rock. With songs performed in 20 languages, Eurovision continues to showcase Europe’s evolving musical identity.

Though the competition aimed to highlight unity, it was overshadowed by geopolitical tension. Demonstrations both for and against Israel’s participation took place, while the European Broadcasting Union enforced stricter conduct policies emphasizing inclusivity and neutrality. For the first time since 2024’s flag restrictions, Palestinian flags were allowed in the audience under Swiss law.
