Australian golfer Jeffrey Guan, who made headlines with his PGA Tour debut in September, is facing a daunting challenge after a freak accident left him blind in one eye. The 20-year-old athlete was struck by a golf ball during a pro-am tournament at Catalina Golf Club in New South Wales, a week after realizing his dream of competing on the professional stage.
In a heartfelt statement on social media, Guan recounted the terrifying moment when he was struck. After hitting a shot, he turned toward his golf cart only to be hit by an errant ball. “The instant ringing and pain rushed to my head, and I dropped to the ground,” he shared. Emergency responders quickly transported him to a hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries to address severe injuries, including fractures to his eye socket. Unfortunately, doctors confirmed that Guan had permanently lost vision in his left eye.
Guan opened up about the emotional toll of the incident, expressing feelings of despair and anger over his situation. “These four weeks have been the toughest of my life, but I am stronger mentally and will be ready to conquer any obstacle in the future,” he vowed. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to his golf career and insists, “I will be back” to fulfill his dreams.
In support of his recovery, a fundraiser has been established to help Guan financially, to raise 500,000 Australian dollars (around $328,000). So far, the campaign has raised over 9,000 Australian dollars (approximately $5,900), providing Guan with some peace of mind as he navigates this difficult journey. A two-time junior national champion, Guan is determined to return to elite golf competition and continue his promising career.
