Anthropic Hits $3 Billion Annualized Revenue, Rapidly Closes Gap with OpenAI in Enterprise AI Race

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has reached a milestone $3 billion in annualized revenue, a steep climb from $1 billion just five months ago, according to sources familiar with the company. This rapid growth, fueled primarily by enterprise demand for AI models in code generation, marks a significant moment in the broader adoption of generative AI in the business sector.

Anthropic’s accelerated revenue trajectory—surpassing $2 billion by March and reaching $3 billion by the end of May—suggests the company may be the fastest-growing SaaS firm in history, according to Meritech General Partner Alex Clayton. Though he noted comparisons aren’t exact due to Anthropic’s mix of enterprise and consumer revenue, the company’s explosive quarterly growth outpaces SaaS giants like Snowflake.

The San Francisco-based startup, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives and backed by Alphabet and Amazon, has carved out a stronghold in the enterprise AI space. Its models, especially popular in the code generation sector, are now powering a growing range of business applications.

Despite its enterprise momentum, Anthropic still trails OpenAI in consumer engagement. Web traffic to Anthropic’s Claude chatbot was just 2% of ChatGPT’s in April, per Similarweb. While OpenAI continues to lead the consumer market—with ChatGPT Enterprise now boasting 3 million paid users including clients like T-Mobile and Morgan Stanley—it is also projecting more than $12 billion in total revenue for 2025, up from $3.7 billion in 2024.

Still, the two AI giants appear to be defining separate lanes: OpenAI as a consumer-first powerhouse and Anthropic as an enterprise-focused disruptor. Anthropic’s $3.5 billion funding round earlier this year placed its valuation at $61.4 billion—significantly behind OpenAI’s $300 billion but growing fast.
