Antarctic Treaty Faces Rising Geopolitical Tensions as Canada Seeks Greater Influence

For 65 years, the Antarctic Treaty has preserved the continent for peaceful scientific research, banning military and mining activities. Signed by 58 countries including Canada, the treaty now faces challenges amid rising geopolitical tensions. Canada aims to secure voting rights as a consultative party at the upcoming Antarctic Treaty meeting in Milan, a move blocked by Russia, which seeks to include its ally Belarus alongside Canada.

In March, the Canadian Antarctic Research Expedition (CARE) 2025 set sail aboard HMCS Margaret Brooke with 15 scientists, raising Canada’s profile in Antarctica through extensive research. The expedition highlighted the impact of climate change on Antarctica’s glaciers and sea ice, which affects global sea levels and climate regulation due to the Southern Ocean’s vital carbon sink function.

Canada is also increasing its military presence in polar regions to address sovereignty concerns, with Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee emphasizing the importance of understanding geopolitical pressures at both poles. The Canadian Navy’s mission navigated extreme Antarctic conditions, marking its most southern voyage to date, while underscoring the delicate balance of security and environmental preservation in the region.
