Another Shake-Up: 3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks B.C.’s South Coast
In the early hours of Friday, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Tsawwassen, just a week after a similar quake rattled Vancouver Island. According to Earthquakes Canada, the tremor was lightly felt in areas around Metro Vancouver and Victoria, but no damage has been reported.
The quake, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m., was recorded at a depth of 57 kilometres and was centred northwest of Tsawwassen. Despite the proximity to urban centres, officials confirmed that no significant impact is expected.
This follows last Thursday’s 4.0-magnitude earthquake, which was felt across Vancouver Island and parts of Metro Vancouver. That tremor was centred near Sidney and D’Arcy Islands, just east of the Saanich Peninsula.
John Cassidy, a senior research scientist with Natural Resources Canada, stated that while minor earthquakes like these are common, they do not predict larger seismic events. However, Cassidy emphasized the importance of preparedness, reminding residents that B.C.’s South Coast is part of an active earthquake zone.
As small tremors continue to shake the region, it’s a timely reminder for residents to stay vigilant and ensure they’re ready for potential larger quakes.
