Sean Baker’s Anora emerged as the big winner at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, securing Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Mikey Madison. The Brooklyn-set drama, centering on a sex worker’s whirlwind romance with a Russian oligarch’s son, has solidified itself as a major contender for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Held in Santa Monica, California, the Spirit Awards celebrate independent cinema. In his acceptance speech, Baker highlighted the financial struggles of indie filmmaking, urging for systemic change.
Competing against I Saw the TV Glow, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, and The Substance, Anora took the top honor. Other Oscar hopefuls also claimed victories—Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Performance for A Real Pain, while Jesse Eisenberg secured Best Screenplay for the same film.
Mikey Madison, who recently triumphed at the BAFTAs, bested fellow nominees including Demi Moore, Colman Domingo, and Sebastian Stan in the Spirit Awards’ gender-neutral acting category. Meanwhile, the documentary award went to No Other Land, a powerful film about the destruction of a West Bank village, while Latvia’s wordless animated feature Flow won Best International Film.
Sean Wang’s Didi claimed both Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also dominated, with acting wins for Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, and Nava Mau. Canadian actress Maisy Stella won Breakthrough Performance for My Old Ass.
While Spirit Award winners don’t always align with the Oscars, they often indicate industry momentum, as seen in previous years. With Anora gaining traction, all eyes are now on the Academy Awards.
