Canada’s Andre De Grasse and Jerome Blake wrapped up the men’s short sprints competition at the Grand Slam Track meet in Miramar, Florida, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. De Grasse, 29, clocked in a season-best 20.23 seconds to place fourth in the 200-metre race, while Blake finished sixth with a time of 20.40 seconds.
American sprinter Kenny Bednarek topped the podium with a world-leading 19.84 seconds, claiming the overall men’s short sprint title. Bednarek’s victory in the 200m came after his win in the 100m the previous day with a time of 9.79 seconds, where Blake and De Grasse finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
This was the debut for both De Grasse and Blake at the Grand Slam Track event. De Grasse earned $15,000 for his sixth-place finish in the overall standings, while Blake took home $12,500.
In the women’s 800m, Canada’s Lucia Stafford struggled in her first outdoor 800m of the season, finishing last in a time of 2:04.93. Meanwhile, Mary Moraa of Kenya won the race with a time of 1:59.51.
The Grand Slam Track series continues with stops in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, with athletes vying for the $100,000 top prize.
