An American Airlines flight traveling from New York to New Delhi was diverted midair due to a reported bomb threat.
Flight AA292 made an unscheduled landing at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport following a “possible security issue,” the airline confirmed on Sunday. However, the threat was later determined to be non-credible.
While American Airlines did not disclose specific details, a source told NBC News that the security concern originated from an email bomb threat. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the crew had reported the issue, prompting immediate action.
“Italy’s safety protocols were activated, and the aircraft was escorted by two Italian Air Force Eurofighter jets before landing safely at 5:30 PM local time,” said Roberto Rao, an airport spokesperson. The plane had initially requested diversion while flying over the Caspian Sea, three hours away from Rome.
Onboard, passengers remained relatively calm, but some grew concerned when the pilot announced the escort by fighter jets. Upon landing, all passengers and their belongings underwent additional security screenings, which some described as “heightened and time-consuming.”
The aircraft was later cleared for departure to New Delhi on Monday after the crew received necessary rest.
