The Miami Open saw major upsets on Wednesday, with unseeded wild card Alexandra Eala shocking No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 in the women’s quarterfinals. Meanwhile, men’s top seed Alexander Zverev was eliminated by No. 17 seed Arthur Fils in a rain-delayed fourth-round match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Eala, ranked 140th, made history by becoming just the third wild card to reach the Miami Open semifinals, following Justine Henin (2010) and Victoria Azarenka (2018). The 18-year-old from the Philippines has now defeated three Grand Slam winners in her incredible run—Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Swiatek. “There is a lot of emotion, but happiness is at the top of the list,” Eala said after securing the biggest win of her career.
On the men’s side, 20-year-old Fils fought through back pain to upset Zverev, breaking him at 3-3 in the third set before sealing the match with a powerful shot down the sideline. He now advances to face Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals.
