Alex Ovechkin delivered an unforgettable performance, scoring his 894th career goal to tie Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record, sparking a wave of emotion and celebration at Capital One Arena. The Washington Capitals captain marked the milestone with signature flair — scoring twice in a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, including the game-winner that set a new record for most game-winning goals in league history.
After the record-tying goal, Ovechkin bowed to Gretzky watching from a suite, sent kisses to his family, and received an on-ice embrace from his teammates. The goal, assisted by longtime teammate John Carlson, was classic Ovechkin — a power-play blast from the left faceoff circle. The arena erupted, his goal song blared, and mascot Slapshot updated the goal counter from 893 to 894.
“I’m still a little shaking and still can’t believe it,” said Ovechkin, with Gretzky by his side. “It’s history. It’s great for the game. It’s great to do it here. It’s special.”
Gretzky, gracious and smiling, added, “I can live with that for 24 more hours. I can still say I’m tied for the most.”
Ovechkin came close to breaking the record with multiple late-game chances but was turned away by Chicago goalie Spencer Knight. Despite having an opportunity at an empty-net goal, Ovechkin chose not to, stating he wanted to break the record against a goalie.
Coach Spencer Carbery confirmed Ovechkin’s decision: “He wants to break the record with a goaltender in the crease, which I appreciate.”
The Blackhawks honored the moment with a post-game handshake line. Ovechkin’s next chance to make history comes Sunday against the New York Islanders.
