Alex Lifeson Rediscovers Musical Joy with Envy of None’s Latest Release

Alex Lifeson, legendary guitarist of Rush, has found a renewed love for music through his work with Envy of None. After Rush disbanded in 2020 following Neil Peart’s passing, Lifeson admits he hadn’t lost his love for music—but the spark had dimmed. That changed when he teamed up with Andy Curran, Alfio Annibalini, and Maiah Wynne to record Envy of None’s self-titled debut in 2022. Now, with their sophomore album Stygian Wavz released, Lifeson is more inspired than he’s been in decades.

Playing three to four hours a day, Lifeson says this new project has reignited his creative energy. He praises the open, collaborative spirit of Envy of None and the freedom it gives him to explore new sonic territory. Notably, he’s taken a more restrained approach to guitar, allowing Wynne’s ethereal vocals to lead the charge—a dynamic he finds deeply inspiring.

Despite celebrating 50 years since Rush’s debut and helping oversee a new box set release, Lifeson is focused on the present. He reflects fondly on his Rush days, especially albums like Moving Pictures, 2112, and Clockwork Angels, but views Envy of None as a distinct, evolving band, not a side project.

Though live shows with Envy of None aren’t guaranteed, Lifeson is open to the idea. Meanwhile, his long-standing friendship with Geddy Lee endures—over tennis, coffee, and occasional jam sessions, where they’re reminded just how complex Rush’s music truly is.

As for a Plan B? Lifeson jokes he could’ve been a plumber, but luckily, he never needed it.
