Alec Baldwin’s Western film Rust premiered at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in Torun, Poland, marking a bittersweet debut. The premiere opened with a dedication to cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who tragically lost her life in a 2021 on-set accident. Festival organizers led a moment of silence in her honor, and the audience filled the hall to capacity, offering applause as the film concluded.
The film’s director, Joel Souza, introduced Rust with heartfelt reflections, sharing how he once doubted he could continue the project after Hutchins’ death. Souza credited Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, who advocated for the film’s completion and took on an executive producer role, as a driving force behind finishing the project. “It was important to him that people who knew and loved Halyna could see her final work,” Souza said. Cinematographer Bianca Cline, who completed the project, praised Hutchins’ creative vision and the groundwork she laid for Rust, as she had already filmed much of it before her passing.
The film tells the story of a young boy sentenced to hang after accidentally shooting a rancher. Baldwin plays the boy’s estranged grandfather, who takes him on the run. Although the theme of gun violence runs through the narrative, it inadvertently parallels the tragic real-life incident in which Baldwin’s firearm discharged on set, fatally wounding Hutchins. Baldwin was cleared of involuntary manslaughter charges earlier this year after allegations of withheld evidence were raised during trial. However, the film’s armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, received an 18-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter due to recklessness in handling firearm protocols.
Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, has declined to attend the festival, viewing the premiere as an “attempt to unjustly profit” from her daughter’s death. In a statement, Solovey expressed disappointment that Baldwin has not personally apologized for the tragedy, a sentiment echoed in her ongoing lawsuit against Baldwin and the production.
Rust Movie Productions representative Melina Spadone issued a statement clarifying that the Camerimage festival is dedicated to cinematographic art, not a profit-driven event. The film’s production team reiterated their intention to complete Rust as a tribute to Hutchins’ legacy, not for financial gain.
Halyna Hutchins’ legacy remains central to Rust, with her friends and colleagues describing the production’s continuation as an act of resilience and respect for her artistry. “Rust was going to change her life but instead it took her life,” reflected filmmaker Rachel Mason, a close friend of Hutchins. “The courage it took to complete this film speaks volumes about the love and respect everyone had for Halyna.”
