Alberta’s Brad Jacobs encountered a challenging path at the Montana’s Brier in Kelowna, B.C., after splitting two qualifier games on Friday. Jacobs fell 7-4 to Canada’s Brad Gushue in the afternoon but rebounded with a 10-6 victory over Nova Scotia’s Owen Purcell in the evening, securing a spot in the Page playoff 3-4 game.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s Mike McEwen saw his playoff run end with back-to-back losses, including a 6-5 defeat to Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone and a 6-4 loss to Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers.
Jacobs now faces a steep climb, needing three consecutive must-win games to claim the championship. He will compete against Carruthers on Saturday afternoon, with the winner advancing to the semifinal against the loser of the Page playoff 1-2 game between Gushue and Dunstone.
The victor of the 1-2 game will proceed directly to Sunday’s final. Gushue aims for a record fourth consecutive Brier title and seventh overall. The Brier champion will represent Canada at the world men’s curling championship in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, from March 29 to April 6.
