A pilot and two children survived for 12 hours on the wing of a partially submerged plane in an icy Alaska lake before being spotted by a Good Samaritan and rescued. The Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser crashed Sunday near Tustumena Lake, known for its treacherous winds, during a sightseeing flight.
Terry Godes, responding to a Facebook post about the missing aircraft, discovered the survivors on Monday and alerted other search pilots. The Alaska National Guard successfully rescued them, with all three sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators from the NTSB and FAA are probing the cause of the crash. Alaska’s rugged terrain and unpredictable winds make air travel essential yet dangerous, as seen in recent fatal crashes in the state.
