Air Canada Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Iowa After Smoke Smell Detected

An Air Canada flight en route from Las Vegas to Toronto was diverted to Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday after smoke was detected in the cockpit, the airline confirmed.

Air Canada Flight 1702, operating an Airbus A321 with 176 passengers onboard, was rerouted “out of an abundance of caution.” The aircraft landed safely and was promptly assessed by airport emergency crews, who cleared it to taxi to the gate.

No injuries were reported, and all passengers deplaned safely around 4 p.m., according to Sarah Hoodjer, spokesperson for Des Moines International Airport.

Air Canada stated it is arranging for another aircraft to transport passengers to Toronto later Wednesday evening. The affected plane is currently undergoing further evaluation.
