In a significant move towards sustainability, Air Canada has signed an agreement with Neste to purchase 77.6 million liters of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The purchase marks Air Canada’s first commercial import of SAF into the country, underscoring its commitment to ambitious environmental goals.
Air Canada’s President and CEO, Michael Rousseau, highlighted the airline’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of its climate strategy. “SAF is a critical component of our approach to environmental sustainability. This purchase contributes meaningfully to our target of sourcing SAF for one percent of our estimated jet fuel usage by 2025,” Rousseau said.
Despite the import, Rousseau emphasized the need for local SAF production in Canada. “To achieve our net-zero emissions target by 2050, Canada must develop a competitive SAF production industry,” he noted. Air Canada is actively urging federal and provincial governments to support SAF industry growth domestically to ensure availability at scale and reduced costs.
Next month, Neste will deliver the blended SAF to Vancouver’s marine terminal, with further shipments scheduled throughout 2025. As global SAF supplies remain limited, Air Canada continues to collaborate with Canadian government entities to encourage local SAF production, ensuring the availability of this crucial fuel at competitive prices.
With Air Canada’s Leave Less Travel Program, corporate customers can offset their travel emissions through SAF purchases or carbon offsets, supporting the airline’s larger environmental mission. This partnership marks a major step in Air Canada’s long-term commitment to sustainable aviation and the global push towards a greener future.
