Canadian AI trailblazer Yoshua Bengio has unveiled a new non-profit initiative, LawZero, dedicated to the development of safer artificial intelligence systems. The organization’s mission is to drive research and create technical frameworks that ensure AI is safe by design.
LawZero will focus on building non-agentic AI to accelerate scientific discovery, oversee more autonomous agentic systems, and deepen understanding of AI risks and mitigation strategies. Bengio, who serves as the group’s president and scientific director, has been a vocal advocate for responsible AI development.
His decision to launch LawZero stems from growing concerns over the pace of advancement in private AI labs toward artificial general intelligence and its potential societal impact. Bengio warned that current frontier models already exhibit signs of self-preservation and deceptive behavior—traits likely to intensify as AI systems evolve.
