AI Casts a Shadow Over Canada’s Federal Election, But Experts Urge Caution

As Canadians head to the polls, a quiet yet powerful force is reshaping the election landscape: artificial intelligence. Despite concerns about AI’s potential to manipulate voters, experts say its real-world impact remains minimal—for now.

Aengus Bridgman, a researcher at the Media Ecosystem Observatory (MEO) and professor at McGill University, likened the current online climate to a dystopian “Black Mirror” episode. The MEO has dubbed this federal campaign the most “dystopian” in Canadian history due to the surge of AI-generated content flooding social media.

While the sheer volume of AI-created material is alarming, Bridgman emphasized that no concrete evidence has surfaced showing that Canadians have been manipulated or persuaded by false information. Nevertheless, he warns that the risk is real and could escalate if unchecked.

As the nation votes, the intersection of technology and democracy faces an unprecedented test, highlighting both the promise and peril of the AI era.
