‘A Minecraft Movie’ Becomes 2025’s Top-Grossing Hollywood Film in Just Two Weeks

After only two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” has surged past $550 million globally, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment adaptation, directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, added another $80.6 million over the weekend, showcasing one of the strongest second-week holds of the year despite mixed reviews.

Despite a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore, the $150 million video game adaptation has connected with audiences, helping to revive the year’s sluggish box office. Overall ticket sales doubled compared to the same weekend in 2024, nearly eliminating the year-over-year deficit.

Among new releases, Angel Studios’ “The King of Kings” opened in second place with $19.1 million and earned an “A+” CinemaScore. “The Amateur,” starring Rami Malek, brought in $15 million domestically and $17.2 million internationally. Other newcomers included A24’s “Warfare” at $8.3 million and Blumhouse’s thriller “Drop” with $7.5 million.

While none of the new titles rivaled “Minecraft,” several exceeded expectations, indicating signs of momentum in an otherwise slow theatrical year.
