Police have arrested a man from Arizona who allegedly threatened to kill Donald Trump after a manhunt that unfolded while the former president was visiting the border state.
Police say 66-year-old Ronald Lee Syvrud, of Cochise County, has made death threats against Trump in social media posts over the past two weeks.
Trump was in Cochise County on Thursday to visit the US border with Mexico.
Last month, Trump was hit by a bullet in a failed assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office says Syrvud is also wanted for failure to register as a sex offender.
He faces several warrants in Wisconsin and Arizona, including DUI and hit and run.
Police said he hails from Benson, Arizona, a town about 50 miles southeast of Tucson.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday afternoon that they have arrested the suspect within county limits.
“This subject has been taken into custody without incident,” the office posted.
Trump spent Thursday in Cochise County, visiting the US-Mexico border.
During his speech, he tried to blame his rival, the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, for allowing illegal immigrants into the country.
Reporters asked him if he knew about the search for the suspect in Cochise County.
“No, I have not heard that but I am not that surprised and the reason is because I want to do things that are very bad for the bad guys,” Trump said.
This is not the first threat to a presidential candidate in this election cycle.
Earlier this month, a 66-year-old Virginia man was arrested on suspicion of making death threats against Vice President Harris, among other public officials.
