The All Progressives Congress, APC- led Caretaker Committee Chairman,Tony Okocha, has announced that the party will not participate in the October 5, 2024 Local Government elections in Rivers state.
Disclosing the development during an enlarged APC stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Okocha said the processes of conducting the elections did not follow the law.
The meeting was attended by leading members of the party in the state, including its former Chairman, Ojukaye Amachree and Senator Wilson Ake, amongst others.
Okocha insisted that the party was excluded from the stakeholders’ meeting involving political parties where the decision to conduct the election was made.
He said the party had gone to court to stop all the processes of conducting the LG election
While insisting that the party in the state would no longer allow itself to be dragged into the opposition, Okocha accused the Emeka Beke-led faction of the party of working in synergy with the state government to oust the committee.
Okocha said the party had already filed an appeal before the Court of Appeal on the recent judgment of a Rivers State High Court that sacked the caretaker committee and reinstated the Beke-led elected executives of the APC.
Some Party stakeholders also urged other factional members to close ranks and join the approved exco by NWC to move the party in the state forward.
The Caretaker Committee chairman also disclosed that recently his position was renewed by the National Working Committee (NWC), adding that his tenure will expire on December 5, 2024.
