The Country Director of Amnesty International, Isa Sanusi, has condemned the invasion of the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Abuja on Wednesday.
He disclosed this in a statement.
The raid, which took place on Wednesday night, was called a “sinister and calculated attack” with the intention of frightening the labour organization.
According to the Statement, security personnel during the raid ransacked the NLC bookshop, confiscating materials and claiming they were used to incite and organize recent protests.
Amnesty International emphasised that Nigeria must respect and protect the rights of trade unions under international human rights laws.
Meanwhile, the Department of States Service has refuted reports claiming that its officers had raided the headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress in Abuja.
The denial comes following allegations by NLC, that the Service had sent armed men to its office, and that they had carted away some documents.
According to the union, the operatives stormed the Labour House around 8:30 pm on Wednesday.
The NLC said it was not immediately able to ascertain all the things taken away from its offices.
However, in a response on Thursday, the Spokesperson for the Service, Peter Afunanya, said its personnel were not responsible for the ransacking of the labour union’s office.
