Winnipeg, July 15, 2024 – The fatal shooting of a 22-year-old soccer player in Winnipeg over the weekend is believed by police to be a “targeted event.”
The athlete, identified as Mohamed Yusuf Abdullahi, was shot outside the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Waverley Street on Saturday evening. The shooting occurred following the final games of the Canada African Cup of Nations 2024 soccer tournament, according to Gode Katembo, president of the event’s organizing committee.
“After the match, everyone was heading home. This incident was unrelated to the outcome of the game or the tournament. It appears to have been a personal conflict targeting an individual,” Katembo explained.
The victim suffered severe injuries to his upper body. Emergency services responded quickly, but Abdullahi succumbed to his injuries by Sunday. The Winnipeg Police Service has since launched an investigation into the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward.
“This tragic event occurred in the parking lot and is not connected to the soccer matches. We encourage anyone with relevant information to assist the police in bringing those responsible to justice,” read a statement from the tournament organizers.
Details about the shooting remain sparse as police continue their investigation. In the meantime, the organization has provided contact information for counseling services for athletes and bystanders affected by the incident.
“We are committed to the safety of our community. This incident has had a significant psychological impact, and we trust the Winnipeg police to conduct a thorough investigation,” Katembo stated.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The community is urged to stay calm and supportive during this challenging time.
