Former US President Donald Trump has attributed his being alive as “by luck or by God”, after Saturday night’s attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump told conservative US media in one of his first interviews since the incident that “he’s supposed to be dead”.

“The most incredible thing was that I happened to not only turn [my head] but to turn at the exact right time and in just the right amount,” he said, adding that he could have been killed by the bullet that grazed his ear.

“I’m supposed to be dead, I’m not supposed to be here,” he said.

A man in the audience identified as Corey Comperatore was killed in the attack, while two others were seriously injured. The gunman, who also died, was named as Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Meanwhile, undeterred by Saturday’s attempt on his life, Trump has arrived in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention.

The party conference in Milwaukee is kicking off as scheduled despite security concerns due to the attack on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, in which he was shot in the ear.

Trump had taken to social media to inform his supporters that he planned to delay his journey by two days, “but have just decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else”.

The assassination attempt on Trump has raised attention on safety and security of the event which begins on Monday.
