A children’s hospital has been seriously damaged in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, and at least 24 people were reported killed in Russian strikes across the country, according to officials.
In Kyiv, no less than 10 people were killed in a rare daytime attack on the city. Footage from the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital captured major damage, with the city’s mayor saying casualties were recorded from the blast.
The head of the military administration in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih confirmed that at least 10 people had been killed there, with three more killed in the eastern town of Pokrovsk and one in Dnipro.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is on an official visit to Poland where he is expected to sign a security pact, said Russia must face consequences for attacking unarmed civilians.
“Different cities: Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk. More than 40 missiles of various types. Residential buildings, infrastructure and a children’s hospital were damaged,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky said in a social media post that people were trapped under the rubble of the hospital.
“Right now, everyone is helping to clear the rubble – doctors and ordinary people,” the president wrote.
Health Minister Viktor Lyashko said cancer and intensive care wards were affected in the blast. Young children were seen in photos sitting outside the hospital as it was being evacuated.
Kyiv’s mayor,Vitaliy Klitschko told the Reuters news agency from the hospital that the bombardment was “one of the the worst attacks” on the capital since the war started.
He said there had been “fatalities” in the attack on the hospital and that the exact number of casualties was being be by authorities.
