NIGERIA : Benue Killings: Labour Party Demands Federal Probe, Immediate Military Deployment

In the wake of the latest violent attacks in Benue State, the Labour Party (LP) has called on the Federal Government to launch an urgent and thorough investigation into the killings and ensure swift deployment of military personnel to restore peace in the region.

The party, in a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, condemned the brutal attacks that claimed several innocent lives and left communities devastated. LP described the violence as not only senseless but also a threat to national security and unity, urging the federal authorities to act decisively to halt further bloodshed.

According to the statement, the party noted that the consistent pattern of attacks across Benue communities suggests a failure of intelligence and security coordination. LP emphasized the urgent need for a special investigative panel to uncover the perpetrators and bring them to justice, noting that the continued silence and inaction by federal agencies risk worsening the situation.

“The security architecture in Benue and across Nigeria must be urgently reviewed. We cannot continue to lose innocent citizens while the government looks the other way,” the statement read.

The Labour Party further stressed the importance of deploying well-equipped military forces to hotspot areas in Benue, especially those repeatedly targeted by armed assailants. They argued that restoring public confidence in the state’s security system is essential, not just for Benue, but for national stability.

The party also expressed solidarity with the affected families and communities, assuring them of its commitment to justice and peace.

Recent reports from local authorities indicate that the attacks, which occurred over the weekend, resulted in numerous fatalities, displacement of residents, and destruction of property. Eyewitnesses and survivors have continued to call for increased federal presence and protection.

This latest tragedy in Benue adds to the growing list of security concerns across the Middle Belt and northern regions of Nigeria. Stakeholders are now echoing the Labour Party’s demand for immediate federal intervention to prevent further deterioration.

As tension rises, observers warn that failure to address the root causes of these attacks could embolden violent actors and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the region.
